December 19, 2025

By Dr. Minas Chrysopoulo, Board-Certified Reconstructive Plastic Surgeon · 8 min read · Updated 2026

While you sleep, your skin shifts into recovery mode, which makes your evening routine the one that sets up how skin looks in the morning. A good night-time routine is not about piling on products. It is about cleansing away the day, adding hydration, and giving skin a calm base to renew itself overnight. Here is a simple eight-step version you can adjust to your skin.

Why the Evening Routine Matters

Overnight, skin is not exposed to sun, pollution, or makeup, so it has a chance to focus on renewal and to hold onto the hydration you give it. That is why the evening is the right time to remove the day's buildup thoroughly and to layer in moisture. Skipping it, or falling asleep in makeup and sunscreen, leaves that buildup sitting against your skin all night, which can leave the complexion looking dull and congested.

The 8-Step Night-Time Routine

You will not need all eight every single night. Treat this as the full menu and keep the steps your skin actually needs.

  1. Remove makeup and sunscreen. Start with an oil-based cleanser or micellar water to dissolve makeup, SPF, and the day's grime.
  2. Cleanse. Follow with a gentle water-based cleanser and lukewarm water to fully clear the skin.
  3. Tone or refresh, if you like. An optional alcohol-free toner or essence can add a first layer of hydration.
  4. Apply your targeted treatment. This is the time for actives like a retinoid or a hydrating serum, used as directed.
  5. Layer a hydrating serum. A humectant such as hyaluronic acid draws water into the skin before you seal it in.
  6. Care for the eye area. Pat a gentle eye cream around the orbital bone if it is part of your routine.
  7. Moisturize to seal it in. Use a richer night moisturizer with barrier-supportive ingredients to lock in everything underneath.
  8. Add an occlusive if skin is very dry. A thin layer of a balm or facial oil on top helps hold moisture through the night.

How It Connects to Your Morning

Your night routine and your morning routine do different jobs. At night the priority is cleansing and hydration so skin can renew. In the morning the priority shifts to protection. That is where InviCible Primer+™, developed by Dr. Minas Chrysopoulo, Board-Certified Reconstructive Plastic Surgeon, fits in: it delivers 17% Stabilized Vitamin C for daytime antioxidant defense and doubles as a smooth, makeup-ready base. Well-hydrated skin at night gives that morning step a better canvas to work with.

Common Night-Time Mistakes

  • Sleeping in makeup. Even one night leaves makeup and SPF sitting in your pores.
  • Layering too many actives. Combining strong acids and retinoids in one night can leave skin irritated.
  • Using hot water. It feels good but strips the very oils your skin is trying to keep.
  • Skipping moisturizer. Even oily skin benefits from sealing in hydration overnight.
"Your evening routine is not about doing more. It is about clearing the day away and giving skin a calm, hydrated base to renew itself." Dr. Minas Chrysopoulo, Board-Certified Reconstructive Plastic Surgeon

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is a night-time skincare routine important?

Overnight, skin is not exposed to sun, pollution, or makeup, so it can focus on renewal and hold onto the hydration you apply. Clearing away the day and layering in moisture at night sets up how your skin looks in the morning.

Do I really need all eight steps?

No. Think of the eight steps as the full menu and keep only the ones your skin needs. Cleansing, a treatment or hydrating serum, and a moisturizer are the essentials, and the rest are optional.

Should I use Vitamin C at night?

Vitamin C is an antioxidant that is most useful during the day, when it helps defend skin against environmental stress, so it pairs best with a morning routine and SPF. At night, most people focus on cleansing, hydration, and any prescribed actives.

Can I skip moisturizer if my skin is oily?

It is better not to. Sealing in hydration overnight helps even oily skin stay balanced, and skipping moisturizer can prompt skin to produce more oil. Choose a lighter, non-comedogenic formula.

Is it bad to sleep in makeup?

Yes. Sleeping in makeup and sunscreen leaves that buildup sitting against your skin all night, which can leave the complexion looking dull and congested. Removing it is the most important night-time step.
