A good workout is great for your skin, but a few simple habits keep sweat from turning into breakouts. What you do before, during, and after exercise makes the difference between a post-gym glow and clogged, irritated skin. Here is how to protect your skin around every workout.

Sweat, Skin, and Breakouts

Sweat itself is not the enemy. Trouble starts when sweat mixes with makeup, oil, dirt, and bacteria and sits on the skin, which can clog pores and trigger breakouts. The goal is simple: start with clean skin, avoid trapping sweat, and cleanse promptly afterward so nothing lingers.

Before Your Workout

Go in with a clean face. Remove makeup before exercising, since foundation plus sweat is a reliable recipe for clogged pores. Tie hair back to keep oils and product off your face, and skip heavy creams that can feel greasy once you heat up. If you are heading outdoors, sunscreen is the exception, and it goes on first.

During Your Workout

Keep your hands off your face, since gym equipment and shared surfaces carry plenty of bacteria. When you need to wipe sweat, blot gently with a clean towel rather than dragging it across your skin, which can cause friction and irritation.

After Your Workout

Cleanse as soon as you reasonably can. A gentle cleanser clears sweat, oil, and bacteria before they settle in. Follow with a light, hydrating moisturizer to replenish the skin, and if you are prone to body breakouts, shower and change out of damp clothes promptly. Rushing this step is where most post-gym breakouts come from.

Working Out Outdoors

Outdoor exercise adds sun exposure to the mix, so a morning antioxidant plus sunscreen earns its place. InviCible Primer+™, developed by Dr. Minas Chrysopoulo, Board-Certified Reconstructive Plastic Surgeon, delivers 17% Stabilized Vitamin C to help defend against environmental stress and sits comfortably under a broad-spectrum SPF before an outdoor session.

Your Workout Skin Routine

  1. Start clean. Remove makeup and tie hair back before you begin.
  2. Protect if outdoors. Apply Vitamin C and broad-spectrum SPF for outdoor workouts.
  3. Blot, do not touch. Keep hands off your face and blot sweat with a clean towel.
  4. Cleanse promptly. Wash your face soon after finishing to clear sweat and bacteria.
  5. Rehydrate. Follow with a light, hydrating moisturizer.
"Sweat is not what breaks you out. Letting it sit is. Clean skin going in, prompt cleansing coming out, and you keep the glow without the congestion." Dr. Minas Chrysopoulo, Board-Certified Reconstructive Plastic Surgeon

Frequently Asked Questions

Does sweating cause breakouts?

Sweat itself is not the problem. Breakouts happen when sweat mixes with makeup, oil, dirt, and bacteria and sits on the skin, clogging pores. Starting clean and cleansing promptly afterward prevents most of it.

Should I wash my face before or after a workout?

Both. Go in with a clean, makeup-free face, and cleanse again as soon as you reasonably can afterward to clear sweat, oil, and bacteria before they settle into pores.

Can I wear makeup to the gym?

It is best not to. Foundation combined with sweat is a reliable recipe for clogged pores. Remove makeup before exercising and let your skin breathe during the workout.

Do I need sunscreen for outdoor workouts?

Yes. Outdoor exercise adds sun exposure, so a morning antioxidant plus a broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher applied before you head out protects against the sun that drives visible aging.

What should I do if I cannot cleanse right after exercising?

Blot sweat with a clean towel and, if possible, use a gentle wipe as a stopgap, then do a proper cleanse as soon as you can. The key is not letting sweat and bacteria sit on the skin for hours.
